There are a lot of things to like about xlconnect
1. you just need java on your bow, which should be there by default, so no problem with firewall/admin rights as you do not have to install anything...

this is the buggiest R package I have ever had the misfortune of installing. save yourself some time and manually format those thousands of excel sheets -- it will be much quicker.
